Millennium Youth Camp - An international science camp for teenagers

The Technology Academy will arrange an international science camp for teenagers in summer 2010 in co-operation with the Finnish LUMA Centre, the Centre for School Clubs, and the Ministry of Education. During the week, the teenagers will familiarise themselves with the Finnish research environment in the natural sciences, and receive information about companies and study opportunities in Finland. The teenagers will also meet the finalists for the Millennium Technology Prize, and will attend the awarding ceremony of the Winner 2010.

The camp will take place from 6 to 13 June in 2010. The campers are aged 16 to 19 and are interested in mathematics, natural sciences, IT, and technology.

The purpose of the camp is to raise awareness of Finland as an innovative research and technology country, and of the study and working opportunities available in Finland.

The themes of the camp include environmental science and technology (climate change, renewable natural resources, renewable energy, water), information and communications technology, digitalisation, and applied mathematics.

During the week, the campers will familiarise themselves with leading researchers at universities and scientific communities. The teenagers will network with the Finnish corporate sector and innovations through various projects. During the week, they will also get acquainted with the finalists for the 2010 Millennium Technology Prize and their respective fields of research.

The main organisers of the event include the Technology Academy, the national LUMA centre, the Centre for School Clubs, and the Ministry of Education. The following are also closely involved with the project: the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, the Finnish National Board of Education, the Academy of Finland, the University of Helsinki, the Helsinki University of Technology, Taloudellinen tiedotustoimisto, the Federation of Finnish Technology Industries, the Union of Teachers of Biology and Mathematics, the Finnish Association of Teachers of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Informatics (MAOL), the Finnish Science Centre (Heureka) and the Museum of Technology. Corporate partners include Kemira, Nokia, UMP and Vaisala.

The two-stage application process commenced at the beginning of October. Applications may be submitted until 30 November 2009. A total of 30 participants will be selected no later than 15 March 2010.
